Electric hybrid drive

Two propulsion systems for your Windelo

Electric Propulsion

The Windelo Electric Propulsion system minimizes the use of fossil fuels.
It consists of two 20 kW electric motors, offering a full electric range of 4 hours at a speed of 6 knots.

This brushless motor with liquid cooling is suitable for intensive use in all sea conditions.
An 18 kW diesel generator extends the motor's range to 1100 nm.

Its direct shaft drive simplifies maintenance and ensures optimal propulsion thanks to a set of retractable three-bladed propellers.

Designed for uncompromising eco-navigation, the Electric Propulsion system comes standard with hydro-generation and a 48 V 60 kWh lithium battery bank.

The combination of energy production (solar & wind) and hydro-generation makes it possible to eliminate the use of fossil fuels thanks to constant recharging of the battery bank.

Electric motor with a good cruising range

Thanks to our innovative electric propulsion drive system, our electric catamarans save a lot of energy.
Our 1120 Ah, 48 V lithium battery bank (by MG Energy) recharges using renewable energy sources first: solar power, hydrogeneration, and wind power.
When sailing on the motor, the electrical draw, connected with the power needed to counteract the drag of the hulls, increases exponentially between 6 and 8 knots. At 6 knots, the Windelo 50 consumes 10 kW. The electrical draw increases to 15.57 kW at 7 knots, and then to 27 kW at 8 knots.

  • At 6 knots, the Windelo 50 has a range of nearly 4 hours and roughly 22.7 nautical miles per day with an 1120 Ah battery bank.
  • At 7 knots, the Windelo 50 has a range of nearly 2 hours and 17 minutes and roughly 15.47 nautical miles per day with an 1120 Ah battery bank.

Control your consumption

Design-sans-titre-_2_

When the energy consumed is not compensated by renewable energies, the 18 kW backup 500 L diesel generator(s) start(s) up to supply the electric motors and recharge the batteries. The generator is in the aft engine bays and communicates with the Boat Management System. It starts up automatically when the batteries are low and/or when the power required is greater than the power the batteries can supply. So, the full cruising range of our catamarans on the motor is 1100 nautical miles. The generator can also be started manually by the skipper in 2 different modes:

  • Cruising range mode: for example, the skipper wishes to start his generator to increase his cruising range when there is no wind.
  • Recharge mode: the skipper starts his generator, which automatically switches off when the batteries are fully charged.

Dual Propulsion

The Dual Propulsion Windelo combines a conventional combustion engine with the comfort and quiet operation of a secondary electric propulsion system.

It consists of two combustion engines on Sail-Drive coupled with two electric motors, each with a power output of 10 kW (2 x 15 kW peak).

The electric motors have sufficient range to handle port maneuvers and approach anchorages, which accounts for more than 80% of the time the engines are used on board a Windelo.

The combustion engines are available for long voyages, offering a comfortable power reserve and a range of over 800 nm.

The Dual Propulsion system also acts as a generator, as it can produce up to 30 kW of electricity (48 V) to recharge the batteries while propelling the boat.

Combined with Windelo’s high-performance hulls, Dual Propulsion allows you to motor with one engine in thermal mode and the other in electric mode. The result: reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions, benefiting the planet.
