Ready to discover these dream spots, breathtaking views, and magnificent beaches? You will find here everything you need to help you to plan the perfect trip! So hop on board!

A beauch in Syvota

Greece is a country with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. This country is considered to be a sailing paradise, because of its numerous gulfs and archipelagos, therefore offering all kinds of seas and winds. Many virgin bays are accessible by boat only, and several hidden gems are waiting to be explored. The perfect climate makes of Greece around year destination for your sailing vacation, but to be precise, the best season runs from April to October.

The Ionian Sea

Mostly thermic and mild, the “Maistros” winds blow from the North West during the summer and make of the Ionian Sea an ideal destination for catamarans sailing. Specifically, the Ionian Islands distinguish themselves for their lush vegetation and their turquoise waters. Each of them is unique and characterized by its own history. Your itinerary could include almost all of the Ionian Islands!

Corfu Island

Corfu is known as one of the most delightful Greek islands. Evoking the Venetian aristocracy and marked by its rich history, it constitutes the ultimate location for cultural immersion. With many beaches to explore, it is the favorite destination of many Greeks and tourists every year. Some of the most renowned beaches are ‘’Canal d’Amour’’, ‘’Issos’’, ‘’Paleokastritsa’’ and ‘’Glyfada beach’’. Many beaches are accessible by boat only, such as ‘’Paradise’’ Beach and the caves close to the ‘’Liapades’’ beach. However, you can also sail to the northern part of the island where you will find the Erikoussa island, and there, you will have the pleasure to enjoy crystal-clear blue waters. Moreover, you can sail across Corfu on the Greek mainland, where you will find Syvota, a place with several must-see beaches, again, accessible by boat only!

Paxi and Antipaxi are two of the smallest islands of the Ionian Sea located on the southern coast of Corfu. These two islands are extraordinarily beautiful. Due to the many yachts that moor at its port every summer, Paxi is one of the hottest destinations to sail in Greece. Paxi is covered by olive trees, pebbled beaches, and small picturesque villages! In Paxi, the ‘’Erimitis’’ beach is marvelous and perfect for your morning dives! Antipaxi also has pebbled beaches and is literally a heaven on earth that you can best discover while being on board! ‘’Voutoumi’’ and ‘’Mesovrika’’ are the most popular beaches but you can also find ‘’Rodovani’’ beach, a secret gem which you should visit in your lifetime!

Syvota

Lefkas or Lefkada is a radiant green island on the West Greek coast. Located between Corfu and Kefalonia, it is the fourth-largest island in the Ionian Sea. According to experts, Lefkada’s sea is one of the best to sail in the world. In fact, sailing around Lefkas feels like sailing in paradise. Some famous anchorages of Lefkas are ‘’Nidri’’ and ‘’Syvota’’. The most delightful beaches are ‘’Egremni’’, ‘’Porto Katsiki’’, ‘’Kathisma’’ and the amazing ‘’Kalamitsi’’! Although, Lefkas is also seen as a stepping stone to Ithaca and Zakynthos: on your way to Ithaca, some of the hidden gems are the wonderful Meganisi with its bays, the private island of Skorpios, the serenely and ravishing Atoko as well as Kalamos island, where you can walk around an exquisite pine forest!

Ithaca, Ulysses’ home, is another Ionian island that boasts a natural landscape as well as mesmerizing beaches. ‘’Vathy’’, Ithaca’s capital is a town located in the South of the island. There, you will find charming alleys and red-tiled roof houses. ‘’Filiatro’’ is a calm bay with white pebbles and crystal waters, surrounded by the Mediterranean vegetation. Located in the East of the island, ‘’Sarakiniko’’ is one of the most famous beaches in Ithaca.

Between Lefkada in the North and Zakynthos in the South, Kefalonia is the largest and greenest Ionian island. Being a picturesque village with neoclassical buildings and rich in sensational food, Fiskardo bay is a great place to stop during your sailing trip! ‘’Myrtos’’ beach is one of the most photographed beaches in the whole of Greece. Similarly, Antisamos is a popular place to sail: close to Sami’s port, it is unique for its natural beauty, made of emerald waters and marvelous green hills. An interesting fact is that following the Hollywood movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, Antisamos, where many of its scenes where filmed, gained a worldwide reputation. Do not miss out on visiting the Melissani cave, which constitutes a unique geological phenomenon: there, you can admire stalactites and swim in mind-blowing blue waters.

Polyaigos, in the Aegean Sea

Zakynthos is ready to unveil its mysteries to you! You will be overwhelmed by the astonishing sunsets on the vertical cliffs of the island. Its beaches the home of an endangered turtle species, the Caretta-Caretta, which, every year, hide their eggs in fine white sand. Explore the Blue Caves of the island, discover the magnificent blue light glowing through the caves, visit the spectacular ‘’Shipwreck beach’’, with its crystal-clear blue waters, accessible by boat only! Sail to the main port of Zakynthos at night, where many incredible places are waiting to be explored, such as the Venetian Castle and Saint Mark Square.

Get ready to discover more! Next week, we’ll guide you through the most beautiful spots of the Aegean Sea

Thank you Atalanta Marine team, for sharing these dream spots and beautiful pictures!

New Boatyard for Windelo Catamaran

With the delivery of its new industrial facility in the port of Canet-en-Roussillon last March, WINDELO is now established for the long term in the French region of Occitania. The Windelo team is currently building the first Adventure 50 eco-friendly catamaran, which has already been sold.

After a year of construction works at the boatyard, the Windelo team has now settled into its new 1600 sq. m production facility. Setting up the facility in the Occitania region was a strategic choice. It enables Windelo to benefit from all the expertise and infrastructures on offer at the port of Canet-en-Roussillon. The 4000 sq. m quayside plot is the first development phase for the boatyard. “The diversity of professionals and facilities in the area make it a hub of excellence for every aspect of the catamaran business. Following the evolution of the project, we could gradually expand our facilities to 10,800 sq. m,” says Gautier Kauffmann, Operations Manager at Windelo.

An Industrial Facility Designed for Building Environmentally Friendly Catamarans

“Our production facility is tailored to our industrial process. It was designed to accommodate new developments in our boat range, and satisfy increases in demand. It houses all the services needed to build and market our boats, including a design office, marketing, sales, and administrative departments, and component manufacturing, assembly and fitting workshops,” adds Gautier Kauffmann.

The Windelo boatyard is divided into distinct zones. The structure of boats is made from an eco-friendly basalt fibre and PET composite in a cutting-edge infusion facility. Once trimmed in the building designed for that purpose, different elements are assembled in the main workshop where three boats can be built at the same time.

The production facility also includes joinery where all the furniture and components for fitting out the boats are made.

Drawing 1: Ground floor of the Windelo production facility showing the assembly, infusion, joinery, and storage areas.

A mezzanine at the back of the workshop provides direct access to the sterns of the boats under construction. This facilitates fitting out the catamarans’ decks and interiors. Various elements can thus be prepared and finished on the mezzanine before being fitted to the boats.

The storage rooms are split between the ground floor and the raised deck to optimize the space for boat building.

Drawing 2: The first floor of the Windelo production facility

This first development phase for the yard will enable to build about ten catamarans every year, with the number of employees steadily increasing to approximately fifty. Once the project has been rolled out completely, the boatyard will enable Windelo to triple production over the next few years.

Hakuna Matata's, the 1st Windelo 50 Adventure, North Atlantic circuit - Multihulls World N° 172

“Hakuna Matata – A North Atlantic circuit next summer”

«Good judgment comes from experience… Unfortunately, experience comes from bad judgment. »

A Multihulls World reader for the past year, I have a Windelo 50 currently in build, on which we are planning a North Atlantic circuit as a family from May to December 2021. So how did this project come about? We’d been talking about taking a six-month family trip for a long time. But with a busy professional life and the children’s studies to think about, the idea had taken a back seat. However, it was high time that we made this dream come true!

For quite a few years now, we have been chartering boats, mainly cats, for between two and five weeks at a time, in the Mediterranean or Brittany (France). The choice of Windelo was a natural one. I like the innovation and customization possibilities. The Windelo has a lot to offer: a good team, a beautiful production site, and a high-performance boat.

Our catamaran is currently under construction at Canet-en-Roussillon, in the South of France. We would like to offer other catamarans the opportunity of sailing with us, with everyone keeping their own program and being able for example to join us wherever and whenever it suits them. If you have sailed this route and have any advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our departure is planned for May 2021 and our journey should take us around Spain and then Ireland, Scotland (July), the Faroe Islands and Iceland, Canada (September), and the United States and the Bahamas. From November to January: Cuba, then the West Indies. Why this route? It should allow us to avoid the high summer heat while benefiting from long sunny days, favorable winds, magical sites, and the Indian Summer…

1ST SALE WINDELO CATAMARAN

THE FIRST WINDELO CATAMARAN, THE ADVENTURE 50, HAS A SKIPPER

Canet-en-Roussillon, 29/04/2020 – Windelo Catamaran has achieved its goal! The first eco-friendly catamaran Adventure 50 has already been paired with her first adventurer, ready to hoist the sails this autumn!

Windelo Is Celebrating Its First Sale

After two years of research and development into new materials, Windelo began to build its first environmentally-friendly catamaran in November 2019. The project attracted a lot of interest and the first sale has just been signed!

A seasoned sailor, Windelo’s first customer came to see their future boat in the new plant, with their own naval architect, just before the stay-at-home order in March. The customer found the boat’s innovations and eco-friendliness attractive and decided it was what they wanted for their voyage in the North Atlantic. This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the staff at Windelo and their customer. What is the goal? A launch in autumn and a cast off in May 2021.

A Long Cruise for Windelo’s First Boat

The boat will set off from France, heading towards the Irish Sea, and then on to the West Coast of Scotland and the Hebridean, Shetland and Faroe Islands. The crew aims to have reached Iceland by autumn 2021. The boat will then cross from Iceland to North America, stopping off in the south of Greenland and sailing around Cape Farewell. It will take them to many dream destinations along the coast of the United States as far as the Caribbean Sea, the final destination of this year-long cruise.  The comfort and performance of the versatile Adventure 50 will make it a fantastic family voyage.

The Windelo 50 and the Windelo 54, Two Highly Innovative Boats

The staff at Windelo aimed high and succeeded, combining innovation with ecology performance, safety and comfort. Designed in partnership with the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, these two boats come in three different versions: Adventure, Yachting and Sport. The Adventure 50, the first Windelo catamaran to put to sea this autumn 2020, is the version designed for exploration and adventure.

Structure

The feature that sets this new boatyard’s project apart is the ecological design of the materials and the construction methods. The construction methods reduce the need for molds, giving the yard greater freedom to vary the models and make changes to the boats designed. The Windelo catamaran structure is made from a new environmentally-friendly composite sandwich, mixing basalt fiber and PET from recycled plastic bottles. The new innovative composite reduces carbon emissions by nearly 50% compared with traditional GRP composite manufacturing methods.

Hybrid engine power

The two electric engines are hooked up to a bank of lithium batteries. These can be charged in different ways, using solar panels as well as the electric engines’ ability to operate via hydrogeneration. These two systems combined mean you can use green energy for short periods when the electric engine is in use. Sailing for longer times on the engine will require starting up the generator after one or two hours, depending on the battery strength chosen. This extends the boat’s cruising range to around 800 nautical miles.

Forward cockpit

“The challenge was to build a boat marrying performance with the joy of sailing, and to create pleasant and spacious living areas at the same time. The boat has an innovative cockpit layout with rigging converging at the helm station midships. It also features a new handling of the living space aft of the nacelle,” says Christophe Barreau. Just behind the mast, the forward cockpit has two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a good view of the sails and the bows, and all the running rigging at hand, limiting the need to move about on deck. When the boat is not sailing, the cockpit can be well protected from the elements and opens up to the stern.

Modular space

Aft of the cockpit everything is flush, offering a large, highly modular space that can easily be opened up

. “We have focused our attention on the geometry of the material and visual boundaries of this space and on the way the doors open”, adds Barreau. Once they are open, they “disappear” so that the interior space blurs with the exterior. The ample windows also modulate ventilation, using a wide range of openings on four sides. The work on modularity and blurring boundaries can be seen to the far aft of the nacelle, where an articulated platform with davits converts to a floor at anchor, and in the aft cabins, where a wraparound porthole does away with the corner between the hull side and the aft side, opening the view.

With the Adventure 50, Windelo has succeeded in building a comfortable, high performance, and eco-friendly catamaran and it will hoist the sails this autumn. What will the catamaran be called? We are eagerly awaiting its name, along with the first stories of our Windelo sailors!

    Ecological approach

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Resistance of materials and mechanical tests

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

    Frédéric NEUMAN

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces.
The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most  passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing  is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a  efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »

Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.

And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.
